Ogun Samast - the racist asshole
I don't think most people remember it now, but some two weeks ago on January 19, a teenage Turkish nationalist assassinated the brave editor of Turkey's only Armenian newspaper. Shortly afterwards, he was apprehended and jailed. Hundreds of thousands marched in protest, and chanting "We are all Armenians!" I thought that would be the end of the story. We were sad and devastated but at least consoled by the fact that this man was an extremist and now being made an example of in jail. Or so I thought. A video of Ogun Samast (that's his name) has now surfaced in which the members of the police take pictures with him in front of a huge Turkish flag that displays racially charged statements. Later the officers give him a smaller flag to hold and wave at the camera, as if the asshole had done something to be proud of.

Turkish police are thoroughly infiltrated by the nationalist Greywolves. And the kind of people like me who found the slaying abhorrent inside Turkey are just a minority, albeit a vocal minority.

We were feeling so united after the protests. What do we have to be proud of, though? Nothing. We can't do a single thing about the racism in Turkish society. All the marching doesn't get you anywhere.
